New arrivals to Boston connected with their communities to find housing and work. Some peddled goods from a wagon or suitcase, labored in textile manufacturing in the Garment District, created handmade goods like Syrian lace, or opened stores where neighborhood residents could find familiar food or imported items from back home.
Peddlers often began by selling on foot, then upgraded to a cart, like this one on Akron Street, Roxbury, 1920.
