People Power! Voices Against Urban Renewal
Community members did not simply sit back and watch while the Boston Housing Authority, then the BRA and private institutions (e.g., Cerel-Druker Corp, Tufts-New England Medical Center), encroached on their neighborhoods. They formed their own organizations, working within and across ethnic, racial, and geographic lines to demand that their voices be heard and that they have a say in the future of their neighborhoods. Sometimes this worked, sometimes it did not.
From 1938 to 1966, Syrian-American Frederick Shibley (1905-1970) published the Mid-Town Journal, covering business-city relations and crime as well as subjects controversial for the day, including the South End LGBTQ community.
