The headline “A Big Job Completed at Boston” appeared on the cover of the railroad magazine Headlight in February 1965. The “job” was the razing of blocks in the South Cove and New York Streets to complete a branch of I-90, the Massachusetts Turnpike. For officials, this was a triumph of urban engineering. But it also destroyed homes and cut neighborhoods off from one another.
