The Denison House on Tyler Street was among the organizations that greeted immigrants when they arrived, offering English classes and helping them find housing and work.
However, the women who ran it believed that some immigrant groups could become “American” more easily than others—a belief shaped by the racial attitudes of the time. Once communities were established, they founded their own associations to help their fellow countrypeople get a foothold in a new city.
